Important Information About Altitude Acclimatization in Cusco
VERY IMPORTANT: We strongly recommend spending at least 2 days at high altitude (above 3,300 meters before undertaking a demanding trek in Peru.
Cusco is located at approximately 3,400 meters (11,150 feet) above sea level, making proper altitude acclimatization especially important before high-altitude trekking.
Allowing your body enough time to adjust to the altitude can help reduce the risk and intensity of symptoms associated with altitude sickness.
During your acclimatization period, we recommend:
- Drinking plenty of water and other non-alcoholic fluids.
- Eating nutritious foods, particularly meals rich in carbohydrates.
- Avoiding excessive physical exertion during your first days at altitude.
- Avoiding cigarettes and alcohol.
- Drinking coca leaf tea, a traditional Andean beverage commonly consumed in the Cusco region.
- Getting enough rest and listening to your body.
Some travelers may consider medication such as Diamox (acetazolamide) for altitude sickness prevention. However, medication should only be taken after consulting with a qualified medical professional who can determine whether it is appropriate for you.
Please note: Coca tea is a traditional beverage and should not be considered a substitute for medical treatment or professional medical advice.
Arriving in Cusco Before Your Trek
VERY IMPORTANT: We recommend arriving in Cusco at least 48 hours before your scheduled trek departure, and preferably allowing additional time when possible.
Arriving early gives you valuable time to acclimatize to the altitude and prepare for your Cusco trekking adventure. It also provides some flexibility in case your itinerary needs to be adjusted due to circumstances beyond our control, such as strikes, road closures, weather conditions, transportation disruptions, or other unforeseen events.
In some situations, we may need to depart earlier than originally scheduled to avoid disruptions caused by strikes or other events beyond the control of Minka Peru Expedition, as described in our Force Majeure Policy.
Your safety, comfort, and overall experience are our priority. Proper preparation and acclimatization are essential for enjoying your trekking experience in Cusco and the Peruvian Andes.
Plan Your Peru Trek with Minka Peru Expedition
Whether you are planning a Cusco trek, high-altitude hike, or multi-day trekking adventure in Peru, we recommend preparing carefully for the altitude and reviewing our booking and cancellation conditions before your trip.
