Apu Ausangate Trek – Nevado Ausangate

The majestic Apu Ausangate is the most imposing one from the Vilcanota Mountain range (Cordillera Vilcanota). Located southeast of the Cusco region this sacred mountain is the highest in the region.

It towers to an altitude of 6,384 m above the sea (20,940 feet) and it is Peru’s fifth-highest snow-capped mountain and you can see it from the Sacsayhuaman fortress.

Apu Ausangate Trek is a high-altitude experience. It takes you mostly through high elevations and mountain pass . There are over five high passes. We highly recommend you to spend a few days in Cusco and acclimate to avoid altitude sickness.

Our Nevado Ausangate trek first will take us around the base of the Apu (Ausangate Mountain).

While hiking Ausangate Trek, we will pass two natural hot springs, where it is possible to bathe and relax. These thermal springs are conveniently located at the beginning and end of the trek. You will be able to experience a really relaxing time before and after the hike.

This five day trip will take you through amazing and glorious places such as turquoise lakes, rainbow mountains, and desert cliffs. Besides having the chance to see flocks of llamas and alpacas that will make this beautiful outdoor trail unforgettable.

The hike is one of the most challenging treks in the Andes. The weather Condition here is unpredictable. The best time to trek is between the months of May to September (dry season). It is also possible to do it during the rainy season (April and October), even though it might rain, it’s warmer.

How tall is the Ausangate?
The Ausangate Mountain has an altitude of 6,384 meters (20,945 feet).

The Apu Ausangate is a snow-capped mountain located in the Cusco region, in Peru. The Quechua word “Apu” means “sir” or “lord”, and it’s used by the local population to named something that is sacred.

In order to visit the Ausangate Mountain, travellers must take a car or bus from Cusco to the small town of Tinki, where the Ausangate Trek starts.

Tour Plan

Day 1: CUSCO – TINKI – UPIS

We will be picking you up from your hotel around 6:00 am. Then we will embark on a three-hour drive southeast, passing through the small towns of Cattca and Ocongate.  Eventually, we will be arriving at our base camp. It is in the local community of Tinki. It is at 3,800 meters (12,465 feet) above sea level. This is the starting point of the Ausangate Trek.  We will serve lunch and coca tea that will help you to avoid altitude sickness.  After a delicious but light meal, we will visit the hot springs in Upis, to enjoy a bath as we delight in the panoramic views of Mount Ausangate. This is the spot where we will take out our sleeping bags and settle up our camp for the night.

After breakfast, we will begin the day with a hike up to the Arapa Pass. It is at 4,850 meters (15,900 feet) above sea level. Hiking through the valley, we will pass several lakes (including Q´omercocha, Pumacocha, and Turquesa). We will then hike uphill to Apacheta Pass. This is slightly higher than Arapa Pass.   Just around the pass, there is a turquoise glacier lake that is fed by the melting glaciers of Ausangate Peak. We will be camping on its shore for the night.

Quite a challenging but interesting day of the five days Apu Ausangate Trek. We will begin the day with an uphill hike to Palomani Pass. At 5200 meters above sea level (17055 feet), Palomani Pass is the highest point of the Ausangate Trek. From the summit, you will get a beautiful view of the Vilcanota Mountain range and the Mighty Ausangate Peak.  After enjoying the pristine sights, we will enter Hatunpa Valley. For the night, we will be camping in a place called Jampa. The campsite is snuggled by the Andean Peaks.

After breakfast, we will hike to the final pass of the Apu Ausangate Trek. Along the way, we will be passing through different highland lakes. For lunch, we will be stopping by Lake Q’omerccocha. After lunch, we will be hiking to a small Andean village called Pacchanta. This serene village nestles amidst the beautiful landscape. We will be camping here for the night. Option: You can upgrade your stay to a comfortable hotel for the night.

After breakfast, we will be hiking for three hours to Tinqui. The place where we started the trek. The route offers spectacular views of the Andean landscapes. You will have the chance to see alpacas, llamas, and sheep grazing in the pastures along the way and take incredible pictures while we advance. Our trip will end with a well-deserved lunch in the village of Tinki. After lunch, we will meet our transport for our drive back to Cusco City.

  • Dinner on the last night.
  • Entrance ticket to the thermal springs in Pacchanta Ausangate.
