Super Sacred Valley Tour

The Sacred Valley of the Incas or Valle Sagrado was a very important site to the Incas. The weekend markets, weaving villages and Incan agricultural terraces makes these beautiful sites an attraction.

The Sacred Valley of Incas is on almost every traveler’s bucket list. Mainly because of its close proximity to Machu Picchu and Cusco. This 100 kilometres long stretch of the renowned Andean valley was the main source of food.

Even today the fertile soil of the valleys grow some of the typical fruits and vegetables that are exclusive to the region. Ancient inca sites like Moray, a renowned agricultural experimental ground, let the Incas learn different farming techniques. Due to which the valley now produces over 2000 different varieties of potatoes itself.

Natives in the Sacred Valley have preserved their culture and traditions extremely well over the years.

Our Super Sacred Valley Tour would offer you a deeper understanding and a first hand experience of the culture, traditions and lifestyle of the zone. As a complement to the Cusco City tour.

Please note: You will need your tourist ticket, in case of not having it, you will be able to buy it at the entrance of the sites.

Day 1: Cusco - Pisac - Urubamba - Chinchero - Maras - Moray - Ollantaytambo

We will be picking you up at 06:45 AM from your hotel/hostel on a private tour to have our full day tour from Cusco. Then we will start a one hour drive towards Chinchero, the first stop on this Super Sacred Valley tour.

Chinchero:

At the rustic village of Chinchero we will be exploring the inca ruins, then will visit a local market where we will be able to buy handcrafted clothes or accessories as souvenirs. It is often overlooked by many travellers. This little town is home to renowned weavers of the country who sell their handcrafts in the markets. Although the market of Chinchero is quite smaller than the one in Pisac, it has a different vibe altogether. The inca ruins of Chinchero were once more like a country resort of the Incan ruler, Tupaq Yupanqui. It was his idea to build many agricultural terraces and aqueducts. Most of them are functional even today. Among all sites in the Sacred Valley, Chinchero has the most fertile soil. Chinchero is renowned for producing Quinoa, potatoes, oca among other vegetables. The main plaza of Chinchero houses a beautiful white washed adobe church built in 1607 by Spanish conquistadors. This church is believed to be built on top of the palace of the Incan Ruler, Tupac Yupanqui once stood. After visiting Chinchero, we will visit Moray.

Moray:

Upon arrival, we will receive a total explanation about the circular shaped agricultural terraces that are the principal attraction here, then will be able to walk around the precinct and take some pictures. Moray is one of the important sites of the Sacred Valley of Incas. These terraces were used to test the growth of crops at different temperature levels. It is one of the many remains that show how advanced the Incas were in agricultural techniques. The depth and design of these circular terraces allowed the Incas to study and invent new farming techniques. The difference in the temperature from the ground to the bottom of the terrace is 15 degrees Centigrade (27 degrees Fahrenheit). We will continue with our next location, Maras Salt pans.

Maras:

In Maras we will be knowing more about the process for salt extraction, the history and how it serves as the primary income from the locals. The salt pans of Maras are one of the most photographed attractions in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. It falls as a cascade down a hillside valley. These geometric shaped salt pools of Maras have been in use since 1400. Salt farmers from the region still practice the traditional method. They harvest Salt in these shallow pools through a process of evaporation. A natural spring water is let into these salt pools and which evaporates and leaves behind the crystals of Salt. These Salt crystals are scraped off without using any modern equipment, instead it’s done manually with rustic tools. Our next stop will be in Ollantaytambo.

Ollantaytambo:

Here, we will receive a guided tour of the archeological complex and will be having an extraordinary view of this prominent site. This place is very popular among travellers that visit Machu Picchu by train. The narrow cobblestone streets of Ollantaytambo is a paradise for photographers.  Ollantaytambo was once an administrative centre for the Inca Empire and also for religious purposes. The ruins of the archaeological complex are a primary attraction here and the most visited in the Valley. In the 15th century, Pachacutec built the fortress of Ollantaytambo and it’s popular for its farming terraces and irrigation systems. Eventually after the Spanish conquest, this fortress that was built for religious purposes turned into a massive battle ground. From high above the farming terraces the Incas managed to track the movements of Spanish soldiers and defeat them. The Inca Manco, who led the battle later withdrew from Ollantaytambo and moved into Vilcabamba with an intuition that the Spanish would come back more strongly. Soon after, the Spanish troops led by Pizzaro conquered Ollantaytambo. We will then stop for lunch in the heart of Sacred Valley, Urubamba. After having a delicious Peruvian buffet lunch, we will continue the trip to Pisac.

Pisac:

Once we arrive in Pisac, we will be exploring the ruins, our tour guide will explain to us about this place, afterwards we will visit the town. The famous handicraft market of Pisac sprawls every Sunday. Plenty of travellers and locals arrive to buy the handicrafts and souvenirs from the vendors at the local market or around town. The ruins of Pisac are the most beautiful among the Valley and sits high up a hill offering breathtaking views from the top. The Pisac complex houses a massive ceremonial centre, a sun temple and many other small sites. Pisac is one of the sites that you cannot afford to miss if you are visiting the Sacred valley. After touring the town and the archaeological site of Pisac, we will end our day trip. Now, it’s time to return to Cusco. Once we arrive around 7:00 pm we will drop you off at Plaza Regocijo, which is next to the main square, Plaza De Armas.
